一、Relevant Regulations
National Health Insurance Act (please click the link) National Health Insurance Act Enforcement Rules (please click the link)

二、National Health Insurance (NHI) is a mandatory social insurance program. Overseas Chinese students who hold valid identity/residency documents and meet any of the following conditions in Taiwan should participate in the NHI:
(一)Resided continuously for 6 months.
(二)Leave Taiwan once for no more than 30 days, and the actual duration of residence in Taiwan is 6 months or longer after deducting the number of days abroad.
(三)Holds the nationality of the Republic of China and has been registered as a resident in Taiwan for 6 months.

三、Eligibility for NHI Participation
(一)Schools collect 6 months of insurance premiums each semester in advance.
(二)The monthly premium is NT$1,377, of which the insured person pays NT$826 and the government subsidizes NT$551.

四、During their period of study, the Overseas Students Advising Division is responsible for managing the National Health Insurance (NHI) coverage of overseas Chinese students (including students from Hong Kong and Macau) enrolled in schools. This includes tracking students' NHI status and ensuring that they are covered by the insurance during their period of study.

五、On-campus and off-campus part-time jobs
(一)If working more than 12 hours per week, the employer is responsible for enrolling the employee in the NHI.
(二)If employed for less than 3 months, the insurance coverage can remain at the school, and the employer does not need to enroll the employee.
(三)When the employer enrolls the employee, the NHI Bureau will notify the school to transfer the insurance, to avoid duplicate enrollment.
(四)The Overseas Students Advising Division will notify the student of the refund of the premium for duplicate enrollment at the end of the semester.

六、Loss of NHI Eligibility due to Expired Residence Permit
When the residence permit expires, the eligibility for enrollment in the NHI is interrupted. The individual must wait for 6 months after re-establishing residency before being able to rejoin the NHI. Therefore, it is recommended to apply for an extension of the residence permit before its expiration date to avoid losing NHI coverage while maintaining the right to medical treatment.

七、Not all Medical Treatments are Covered by NHI
According to the regulations of the NHI, when illness, injury, or childbirth accidents occur, the NHI will provide coverage in accordance with the law. However, preventive surgeries, vaccinations, and other items are not covered (such as hepatitis B vaccinations, health checkups, etc.).

八、Individuals holding the nationality of the Republic of China are required to enroll in the NHI with their family members (direct blood relatives) or enroll themselves at the public offices/branches of the NHI Bureau in their registered domicile (township, city, or district) in accordance with the regulations.
