Basic Subject Waivers Certification Exam (Chinese for overseas chinese students subject)
Explanation
  1. Students who meet the application qualifications and pass the waivers certification exam can waive College Chinese.
  2. Those who are approved for waiving College Chinese will be granted 6 credits, which count towards graduation and are equivalent to being exempted from the required College Chinese courses.
  3. Students approved for waiving College Chinese who choose to take College Chinese courses will have their course credits offset against general education credits in accordance with the university's implementation guidelines for general education and basic competency courses.
Eligibility for Registration Overseas Chinese students (excluding those in the Department of Chinese Literature) who meet one of the following conditions are eligible to apply for the exam:
  • Achieved an advanced level (including fluency level) or higher in both listening and reading tests of the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL)
  • Reached Level 6 in the New Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK)
  • Achieved Level 1 or higher in the Chinese Language Proficiency Test (中国語検定試験)
  • Achieved Grade A in the Test of Chinese Communication Skills (TECC)
  • Achieved a B- grade or higher in the Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM)
  • Achieved B6 grade or higher in the Malaysian Unified Examination Certificate (UEC)
Application Procedure Submit the relevant language proficiency test proof documents to apply and participate in the exam. Those who meet the application qualifications and pass the Waivers Certification Exam will be exempted from "College Chinese: Advanced Level."

Eligibility Review NTU students (excluding those in the Department of Chinese Literature) should prepare the relevant language proficiency test proof documents from within the last two years, including one original and one copy. On the "copy," indicate the student's "student ID number, name, contact phone number, and frequently used email address." These documents must be verified in Room 8 of the Department of Chinese Literature by 16:00 on the exam day at the latest.
The originals will be returned after verification, while the copies will be retained by the Department of Chinese Literature. Students who do not complete the verification process on time will not be granted the exemption.

English Waiver Certification (either by exam or review)
Explanation: Students who obtain waiver qualifications are waived from Freshman English, which is equivalent to being waived from the required foreign language courses and advanced English courses. They will be granted credits (a total of 6 credits) that count towards graduation but will not be included in the credit count for the first and second semesters of the freshman year, nor will they receive a grade.
 
  Exam Review
Eligibility for Registration Chinese students who participate in the "English Proficiency Test" (the exam on August 12) and achieve the standards set by the Freshman English Committee.
  1. have passed the General English Proficiency Test (GEPT) at the Higher-Intermediate level or above (both the preliminary test and the final test)
  2. have achieved a score of 83 or higher in the new Internet-based TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language)
  3. have achieved Level 6.5 or above in the IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System)
  4. have achieved Grade B or above in the FCE (First Certificate in English) or FCE for Schools
  5. have achieved a score of 865 points or higher on the TOEIC (Test Of English for International Communication) Reading and Listening test, together with a score of 170 or higher on the TOEIC Speaking Test and a score of 165 or higher on the TOEIC Writing Test
  6. have achieved a score of 217 or above in the FLPT (Foreign Language Proficiency Test) English Reading and Listening Test, together with a Level S-2+ or above in the English Speaking Test and a level B or above in the English Writing Test
  7. have achieved Level 8.5 or above in the TOEFL Essentials Test
  8. have achieved Level 4 or above in the Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition Exam or English Literature and Composition Exam

Scan and email the application form and related certificates to forex@ntu.edu.tw to apply (download the application form). After arriving in Taiwan, bring the original certificates to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures office for verification.

Exam/Review August 22, 08:05 - 11:20 The list of approved waivers will be announced on the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures website on August 26 (Monday). Students who pass the waiver certification will be exempted from the required foreign language courses and advanced English courses, granted credits, and these credits will count towards graduation. Students who do not bring the original certificates to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures office for verification by 17:00 on September 9 (Monday) will have their waiver qualification canceled.
