  Overview
With extensive experience as an editor and literary award judge, Canadian translator and writer Yilin Wang will be in residence at the Taiwan Literature Base this month.
She will lead participants through three sessions focusing on writing, translation, and publishing, offering a comprehensive literary practice experience.


Session 1 Literary Translation 101 for Writers, Translators, and Publishing Professionals
Date: Sun. October 12 | 14:00 - 16:00
Yilin Wang will introduce the role of literary translators in the North American publishing world, covering topics such as work selection, the translation process, rights negotiation, editing, and publishing workflows.
The session includes interactive activities and a Q&A. Suitable for those interested in translation, writers seeking to enrich their practice, or publishing professionals considering collaboration with translators.

Session 2 Mandarin-English Poetry Translation Workshop
Date: Sun. October 19 | 14:00 - 16:30
This workshop explores challenges in translating Chinese poetry into English, including accuracy, subtext, figurative language, poetic devices, ambiguity, allusions, and conciseness.
Participants will study classical and modern poems, analyze published translations, and observe Wang’s process in translating The Lantern and the Night Moths.
Participants should bring a poem (Classical Chinese, Mandarin, or other Sinitic languages) for translation exercises and discussion.
Recommended: basic Mandarin and English proficiency Please bring your own pen and paper
Session 3 How to Submit Your Writing and Translations for Publication: An Editor’s Perspective

Drawing on her editorial and jury experience, Yilin Wang will provide strategies and resources for publishing in North America and internationally. Topics include: Setting publication goals Finding suitable journals and publishers Benefits of contests and awards From acceptance to contract, editing, and publication Understanding different types of rejection letters Transitioning from journal publications to a debut book
